How to use Coconut Oil to keep YOUR dog's mouth and teeth fresh, clean & healthy! PLUS a FREE Coconut Oil oral health recipe for YOUR dog!
One of the most frequently asked questions that we get from pet owners is, "Do i really need to brush my dog's teeth?" and our answer is, "Yes, yes and definitely yes!". Taking care of your dog's teeth is the key to unlocking a happy, long and healthy life and fur parents know that time spent with a fur friend is never long enough!
Poor dental health in dogs can also pose some serious health risks for them and start affecting their organs, such as the heart. Studies show that 80% of dogs over the age of three years old have developed some form of dental disease. Gingivitis is an early stage of Periodontal Disease which causes tooth and bone loss - left untreated, it is irreversible (scary stuff!).
Looking after your pooches mouth will not only save YOU money from all the visits to the vet but also prevent them from suffering from unnecessary health conditions in the long run (not to mention sweeter smelling breath for those extra kisses)!
Gum disease in pets can increase the risks of the following serious health problems:
- Autoimmune disease
- Heart, kidney or lung infection
- Heart failure
- Sinus infection
- Sepsis (infection of the bloodstream)
- Premature death
Let's take a look at the symptoms of dental disease (just in case you were starting to wonder!):
- Depression, lethargy or unkempt coat
- Gingivitis (red, swollen or bleeding gums)
- Facial swelling
- Loose teeth or teeth falling out
- Bad breath
- Weight loss and loss of appetite
- Dropping food from mouth while eating
- Pawing the face
- Discharge from eyes and nose
The key to managing dental disease is prevention! Dogs tend to be a little bit more cooperative when it comes to cleaning their teeth than cats. You can imagine the fuss that a cat must put up if you had to come anywhere near their mouths with a toothbrush! We recommend that you invest in a toy for your kitty, such as Pestages Fresh Breath Mint Stick, which they LOVE to chew on and will (unbeknown to them!) help to remove plaque and tartar build up as well as freshen their breath!
